Nissan Motor Co. announced that is suspending the construction of the EUR156m ($206m) lithium-ion EV battery factory in Portugal (Cacia). The project has turned out to be unnecessary for the immediate future as the other plants, namely the Japanese, U.S., British and French facilities, are expected to meet the forcasted demand.

Antonio Pereira-Joaquim, a company spokesman, stated:

“The Portuguese project is suspended without a date for reactivation. We are going to study alternatives for the use of the building that has already been built. We’ve analyzed our battery output capacity and our four plants basically can make what had been expected to be produced by five plants. The Portuguese plant is the only one that is not adjacent to a Nissan car plant so it was suspended.”

The plant project, located near Cacia city, involved a 156 million euros investment and was supposed to deliver by 2015 over 50,000 lithium-ion batteries per year for Renault and Nissan EVs. It was expected to create jobs for 200 people.

Nissan underlined that the decision is anyway linked to the current economic crisis in Portugal, a country that is facing with the worst recession since 1974.

Nissan revealed recently a demonstration video of induction charging for its Leaf EV vehicle. The company announced that is developing a charging system aiming to allow induction battery charging through a wireless connection.

The system seems to be quite simple: drivers park over an induction charging mat that creates a wireless connection to an electric vehicle’s on-board charger. Using a dashboard display to navigate, drivers back up so the charging map is under the rear wheels. Sensors stop the car at the appropriate spot and the charging is started by operating a touch-screen display on a charge point. Charging status is shown on the accompanying pedestal’s screen.

The electromagnetic induction unit provides 80 to 90 percent efficiency and can charge at rates between 3 and 6 kWs, meaning it will charge the car in about eight hours.. It is said to be arriving sometime in 2013 and will only be available from the factory, so sorry, no retrofits for earlier buyers.

Regarding EV vehicles, Nissan also announced the developing of a smaller fast-charging spot and of a system that will allow homeowners to tap the energy stored in Leaf batteries to power their home – which will be available in Japan next summer for a price of about $6,400.

You can see below the video demonstration on induction charging released by Nissan last month in Japan.
